Demetrios Galanis (1879–1966) was a Greek-born artist who worked in Paris for most of his career, becoming one of the most important printmakers of the 20th century. He began as a painter but became particularly famous for his etchings, wood engravings, and lithographs. Galanis moved in the circles around Picasso, Braque, and the Cubists, and his work combines classical clarity with a modern simplification of form. He had a significant influence on the development of modern printmaking in France.
Although Galanis was friends with leading avant-garde artists, he himself remained remarkably modest and elegant. Picasso is said to have once teasingly called him "the most French of all Greek artists"—a nod to how thoroughly Galanis had embraced the Parisian art world. In 1945, he was even elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, a rare honor for a printmaker.
In the lithograph "La Malatresse," Galanis demonstrates his refined sense of line, volume, and balance. The figure is simply composed, with soft yet confident contours that convey both strength and vulnerability. The composition is restrained and almost sculptural, typical of Galanis's style: modern, yet rooted in classical harmony. The lithograph emphasizes his ability to create a timeless, human presence with limited means.
