This is a very rare artist's proof, hand-signed by the Surrealist artist Leonor Fini, whose renown continues to grow thanks to the movement to rediscover women artists. This rare original lithograph depicts a woman reminiscent of a romantic figure by Johann Heinrich Füssli and a character invented by the artist, Rogomelec, a king dressed in a sumptuous peacock feather cloak. The print is in good overall condition (minor creases invisible under glass and in a frame). The painting from which this print is taken was exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in Paris for the centenary of Surrealism in 2025. Dimensions of the lithograph: 56 x 73.5 cm.
Leonor Fini was the life and soul of the party within the Surrealist movement, along with Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Jacqueline Lamba, and Claude Lalanne. Many consider her the most fiercely independent female artist of the 20th century.
By the age of 17, she had already become familiar with Renaissance art and Mannerist painting. In 1931, at just 24 years old, Fini moved to Paris and met influential artists such as Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà. She also met Max Ernst, a pioneer of Surrealism, with whom she began a romantic relationship; he introduced her to other members of the movement. Her work and flamboyant personality attracted the attention of many of the most celebrated artists and thinkers of the 20th century, including Salvador Dalí, Jean Cocteau, Albert Camus, and Jean Genet, to name just a few. She exhibited her work in numerous Parisian galleries.
