Product description
A striking large-scale handcrafted ceramic vase, made in Germany 1956 and most likely originating from the West German studio pottery tradition of the Westerwald region. The vase is distinguished by its strong, classically balanced form and a sophisticated horizontal glaze decoration in deep moss and graphite green, warm rust red and soft cream tones. The subtly mottled and finely textured surface gives the glaze an almost mineral quality, while the alternating bands emphasize the generous proportions of the vessel. The underside is hand-inscribed “Handwerks Arbeit” and dated 1956, together with the notation “60/45 cm”. The piece is therefore especially interesting as an early example of German post-war art pottery, created at a moment when traditional ceramic craftsmanship was increasingly combined with a more abstract, modern decorative language. Stylistically and technically, the vase shows affinities with early Westerwald art pottery and the circle around manufacturers such as SAWA in Ransbach-Baumbach, although no definitive maker attribution has yet been established. Its red-brown clay body, hand-finished decoration and individual character distinguish it clearly from the more industrially produced West German ceramics of the following decades. With its monumental scale, restrained palette and highly accomplished surface treatment, the vase represents a refined example of early West German post-war modernism, positioned between traditional studio pottery and the emerging design language of the 1950s.
