Superb and very rare ceramic wall sculpture from the 1960s by Helmut Schäffenacker. This expressionist portrait and its glazed reliefs are reminiscent of some of the anthropomorphic works of Pablo Picasso, Roger Capron, and the Cloutier brothers, created in terracotta.
Schäffenacker is my favorite German ceramicist. He was the son of Otto Schäffenacker, a famous painter from the early 20th century. His ceramic studio's production was very limited. His works are therefore rarer than those of other ceramicists of the period.
The plaque has a hanging system on the back and is marked with the studio's intaglio stamp.
Excellent overall condition with only minor signs of age. A slight chip is noted on the left corner of the plaque.
