An exceptional studio ceramic vase by Albert Kiessling, one of the most distinctive figures of East German ceramic art. Combining sculptural form with an extraordinary tactile surface, this vessel exemplifies Kiessling's highly individual approach to texture, material, and organic abstraction.
The vase is conceived as a gently tapering cylindrical form, its silhouette remaining restrained while the surface becomes the true protagonist. A deep matte cobalt-blue ground is almost entirely enveloped by a dense field of raised black relief elements. These volcanic, coral-like formations create a dramatic interplay of shadow, texture, and rhythm, transforming the vessel into an object that feels as much geological specimen as ceramic sculpture.
The contrast between the cool blue body and the dark, porous relief is particularly striking. The surface appears alive, recalling lava rock, marine organisms, or microscopic natural structures. About Albert Kiessling
Albert Kiessling (1918–1981) was among the most significant ceramic artists working in the German Democratic Republic. His works occupy a unique position between studio pottery, sculptural ceramics, and modern decorative art.
