606 wall unit by Dieter Rams for Vitsoe, 1960s Germany. The 606 is a well-known modular shelving system that became a benchmark of modernist design. The system is based on a simple and highly functional principle: vertical rails with adjustable shelves and cabinets that can be arranged in countless configurations. This makes the unit extremely flexible and easy to adapt to different interiors or storage needs. The composition shown here includes a series of flap-door cabinets and open shelves mounted on aluminium rails. Each of the flap-door cabinets contains an internal shelf for practical storage, while one of the cabinets is fitted with a dedicated LP storage system, designed to neatly organize vinyl records. The clean aluminium finish and restrained detailing give the piece its characteristic minimalist appearance. Because the system is modular, elements can easily be moved, expanded or rearranged, offering virtually endless possibilities for customization. The previous owner displayed his hi-fi system on the unit and used the open compartments to place his speakers. Dieter Rams (born 1932) is one of the most influential industrial designers of the 20th century. Known for his philosophy of “less, but better,” Rams focused on clarity, functionality and long-lasting design. His work for Braun and Vitsoe helped define modern product design and continues to influence designers and brands today. The system is in good vintage condition. The top surfaces remain very neat. There are some signs of use here and there, mainly in the typical areas around the flap doors.
