Landscape Complementary 4, acrylic paints on canvas, unique, hand-painted piece, 69 x 53 cm, with frame.
The painter Klaus Soppe has been exploring the play of complementary colors for several years.
In Soppe's first series, "Nudes from the Back," the background, partially realistic in its painting, gridded with complementary colors, creates an intangible color surface. In the viewer's eye, an atmospheric space emerges, allowing the realistically painted part of the picture to come to the fore.
In Soppe's second series, "Variations on Paul's Apples," Soppe draws on Paul Cézanne's apple still life series and incorporates some of Cézanne's motifs into his complementary painting. The result is paintings with a striking style. Through the deliberate use of complementary colors, the motifs appear three-dimensional upon closer inspection. Three-dimensional vision arises
in the viewer's mind through perception with both eyes. In Soppe's paintings,
a three-dimensional effect is created exclusively through the use of complementary grids. This allows the images to be perceived three-dimensionally,
even when viewed with only one eye.
The Neo-Impressionists, such as Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Théo von Rysselberghe,
and Anna Boch, already used a color grid in their paintings.
Also known as Pointilism, they developed luminous color surfaces with an atmospheric effect through finely gridded and dotted pure colors.
Soppe further develops this technique through the deliberate use of complementary colors and coarse grids, allowing his paintings to shine in almost garish colors, as is familiar from Pop Art. Soppe, with self-irony,
calls his painting "Pop Neo-Impressionism."
