Colorful Nara Kokeshi. This is a special handmade Nara Kokeshi (or Nara-ningyo / Kandori Doll), a traditional artisanal creation from the Japanese region of Nara. Unlike classic kokeshi dolls from the Tohoku region (which often feature smooth, solid paintwork), this Nara variant is unique due to its three-dimensional wooden panels that wrap around the body like a kimono, beautifully decorated with hand-painted landscapes and Japanese calligraphy. Left Sleeve: There is Japanese text with an image of a waterfall in a natural landscape with trees underneath. The text includes the characters 若美の (wakami no) and 光の日 (hikari no hi), which may relate to a specific region, natural beauty, or a poetic description. On the right sleeve of the kokeshi, there is handwritten Japanese calligraphy (text) alongside a painted landscape that appears to refer to a nature or mountain scene. The visible characters on this sleeve can be read as, among others, 「あをによし」 (Awo ni Yoshi) and 「青軍」 or a similar poetic expression. Awo ni Yoshi is a traditional Japanese term known as makurakotoba (a fixed epithet or poetic prefix) classically associated with the ancient capital of Nara and often used in Japanese poetry to describe the natural beauty or cultural heritage of that region. The height is 10 cm; please view the photos for the condition. Please note: The kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and cracks present to a greater or lesser extent.
