The black E27 socket is undamaged and free of any burn marks. • Details: The heavy glass counterweight in the base is intact, except for two small chips (see photos, marked with an arrow). The original LBL logo is clearly legible on the underside. The aluminum cooling ring on the shade is scratch-free. This Bauhaus-style Kandem LBL burgundy Bakelite desk lamp is a one-of-a-kind piece! LBL VEB Leuchtenbau Leipzig (LBL) was founded in 1889 by Max Körting (1862–1948) and Wilhelm Mathiesen (1859–1936) as Körting & Mathiesen AG, Bogenlampenfabrik (manufacturer of carbon arc lamps for street lighting). It was one of the first lighting manufacturers in Germany. In 1901, the company changed its name to Körting & Mathiesen AG. Thirteen years later, in 1914, "Kandem" was chosen as the brand name, and the company produced its first lighting fixtures. The company's first "design classics" were the Model 656 and Model 679 desk lamps, designed by Marianne Brandt (1893–1983) and Hin Bredendieck (1904–1995) in 1928. Brandt became head of the metal workshop at the Bauhaus in 1928. Kandem sold 50,000 lamps within just a few years. At the Bauhaus metal workshop, Brandt worked with Christian Dell, Hans Przyrembel, and Wilhelm Wagenfeld. The equally popular Model 937 was designed by Heinrich Siegfried Bormann. It is unknown who initiated the collaboration between the Bauhaus Dessau and K&M from 1928 to 1933. Walter Gropius, Hannes Meyer, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe led the collaboration at that time. At least 25 lamp models were created during these five years. Many of the models designed by Bauhaus designers were produced and sold, sometimes in slightly modified form, until at least 1939. World War II During the Nazi regime, the company was nationalized and became one of the leading manufacturers of household appliances. During World War II, Kandem primarily produced large searchlights for anti-bombing purposes. At the time of liberation by American troops in April 1945, the factory mainly employed women, foreign laborers, and forced laborers. At the end of 1945, the factory facilities were partially dismantled and handed over to the Soviet Union as reparations. Production continued under Soviet management. VEB Lelifa In 1948, the company was repurchased and the state-owned enterprise Leipziger Leichttechnische Spezialfabrik (VEB Lelifa) was founded. VEB: Volkseigener Betrieb (People's Owned Enterprise). In the same year, Fritz Körting, the son of the company's founder and a member of the company since 1930, founded Kandem Apparate- und Leuchtenbau GmbH in Limburg an der Lahn, West Germany. VEB Leuchtenbau Leipzig In 1951, the state-owned company "VEB Leuchtenbau Leipzig," or LBL for short, was reorganized and re-established. With 1,100 employees, it was the largest lighting manufacturer in East Germany. In the late 1950s, streetlights shaped like spoons were produced—a well-known design used on many streets in East Germany and the Soviet Union. As part of the nationalization process in 1972, almost all lighting manufacturers in East Germany were merged into VEB Narva. A branch office was opened in Berlin in the 1970s and remained operational until the mid-1980s. Following German reunification in 1990, the company was placed under trusteeship. In 1993, it was dissolved and subsequently operated as Leipziger Streamline-ModerneLeuchten GmbH. Kandem Leuchten GmbH, based in Limburg an der Lahn and owned by Fritz Körting, became a member of the Dr. Fisher Group in 2010. Designers who worked for the company included Marianne Brandt, Hin Bredendieck, Heinrich Siegfried Bormann, Hermann Gautel, Alfred Schäfter, and Helmut Schulze. ...
