Framed print of the Sparganura Glyceraia from the books of the renowned British naturalist / ornithologist John Gould (1804-1881). In English, this hummingbird has the common name "Purple Tailed Comet". The current classification of this species is Zodalia glyceria.
The "A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds", published between 1849 and 1861, has a supplement published in parts between 1880 and 1887. This image appears in it.
The work is framed (as part of a series of 6 from various publications by Gould) by the framing firm Gabriël van Thienen in Brussels (a family business currently known as Maison van Thienen). The address label of the framing firm on the back shows the address where they were established under this name between 1917 and 1964. Consequently, this print by Gould most likely originates from the facsimile edition published by The Ariel Press in 1955. The frame and passe-partout show some signs of aging, which are not surprising given their age and (as far as I am concerned) only add to the charm of the piece.
