2x a bronze Plaque
Pair of antique bronze reliefs - Stations of the Cross - Signed M. Thomas - Model 972B (Total 3.7 kg)
A special and rare pair (pendant) of solid bronze relief plates, crafted by the sculptor M. Thomas in the early 20th century (approx. 1920-1940).
These reliefs originally formed part of a high-quality Stations of the Cross series. The set is distinguished by the presence of specific foundry features indicating skilled production for an ecclesiastical setting.
Features and Details:
Artist: M. Thomas (fully signed on the front of both plates).
Material: Solid bronze with a beautiful, deep, and original patina.
Weight: The plates weigh 1930 grams and 1800 grams respectively (total approx. 3.7 kg of solid bronze). The slight weight difference is characteristic of the artisanal sand casting process of that period. Model number: 972B (listed on the reverse).
Rare markings: The reverse of the plates bears the casting stamps "D" (Droite/Rechts) and "S" (Gauche-Sinistre/Links). This confirms that these plates were cast as a complementary pair for a symmetrical arrangement in a church building.
Numbering: One of the plates is marked with the number "4", which refers to the 4th Station of the Cross (Jesus meets his mother).
Condition: In excellent antique condition with a very fine sheen. The reverse features the original threaded mounting points for wall attachment.
Artistic value:
The work of M. Thomas is known for its powerful expression and fine detailing, as can be seen in the crown of thorns and the serene facial features of Christ. A beautiful duo for collectors of sacred art or as an impressive architectural element in a classical interior.
