The town where this sanatorium is located was once the Soviet Union's most important spa. In all, there were 19 sanatoriums and nine bathhouses. The train connection to Moscow brought more than 100,000 visitors a year to bathe in the healing waters. Joseph Stalin was one of them. A personal bathhouse was specially built for him.
Traveling and photographing with a fascination for abandoned architecture and past glory, Jef Peeters seeks and explores lost and forgotten places to be rediscovered. He captures the soul and forgotten stories and turns them into narrative images.
