🇳🇱 Jean-Louis Delenatte (1945-2000)
Instinctive painter - School of Montpellier & Sète - Art brut & free expression
Jean-Louis Delenatte was born in 1945 in Montargis. He was a self-taught artist who found his way between art brut, free expression and human-centered, poetic figuration.
His artistic development began in Paris, where he regularly visited Master Mac Avoy's studio. He later settled in Montpellier, where he continued to work outside the official circuits, true to his inner independence. He occasionally visited Adrien Seguin's studio in Celleneuve for consultation and inspiration.
Although he led a solitary existence, Delenatte was not a recluse. He sometimes sought contact with others, but his speech disorder made him difficult to understand, which gradually led to a certain seclusion.
In his small apartment on Rue de la Méditerranéenne, which was also his studio, he worked tirelessly. Always with a sketchbook in hand, he wandered through Montpellier, Sète and Carpentras, looking for everyday scenes and human presence.
His work combines ink, gouache and oil paint in a thick, tactile matter and tense, expressive line. Despite Parkinson's disease and heavy medication, he continued to paint with unyielding dedication - art was his only true refuge.
