A lovely low and wide two-panel furosaki’byôbu 風炉先屏風 (tea-ceremony folding screen), made with a central span of stretched, semi-transparent mesh set within a black lacquered wooden frame. The mesh is coloured with a soft water-ripple pattern, evoking the surface of a calm stream. Its gentle translucency subtly obscures what lies behind.
The front is bordered with a purple brocade band, and the reverse with an ecru band.
In Japan, screens of this type are traditionally placed as a backdrop for ikebana arrangements or tea ceremony utensils.
