Japanese Studio Pottery Duo – Copper Red Lustre & Matte Green Ceramic Vases, Japan, Mid-20th Century
A thoughtfully curated pair of Japanese ceramic vases united by form, proportion, and colour despite their differing origins and surface treatments. Together they create a striking dialogue between brilliance and restraint, combining the dramatic iridescence of a spherical vessel with the quiet elegance of a low sculptural form.
The larger vase presents a classic Tsubo-inspired silhouette with a compact spherical body and narrow opening. Its extraordinary glaze shifts between deep copper red, oxblood, emerald green, bronze, and metallic violet, producing an almost volcanic luminosity. The surface changes continuously under different lighting conditions, revealing layers of colour and subtle iridescence.
Its companion vase offers a contrasting visual language. Executed in a muted matte green glaze, its broad low profile and flared neck evoke both traditional Japanese flower vessels and the refined simplicity of later studio pottery. The restrained surface allows the sculptural form itself to take centre stage.
Displayed together, the two vessels achieve a remarkable balance. The glowing metallic richness of the spherical vase is anchored by the quiet architectural presence of the matte green piece, creating a composition that feels both harmonious and intentionally contrasting.
