Exceptional and rare antique Japanese Imari plate (Arita porcelain) from the late Meiji period (c. 1890 - 1912), notable for its exceptional octagonal shape (kakuzara).
This plate immediately distinguishes itself from the more commonplace round Imari plates through its sleek geometric shape and the wildly dynamic decoration.
Features and Decoration
Design: Decorated in a beautiful swirling 'carousel' or 'pinwheel' pattern (somewake). The spiral segments alternate with lush floral motifs (chrysanthemums), delicate geometric patterns, and waves.
Color Palette: Richly painted with deep underglaze cobalt blue, vibrant iron red, and striking accents in bright Meiji green and hand-painted gold.
Backside: Features an elegant, stylized blue branch/bow motif and a characteristic, unglazed foot ring that has turned light orange-brown due to the firing process. The plate is traditionally mark-free. Condition and Dimensions
Condition: In very good antique condition. No chips, no hairline cracks or fissures, and no restorations. The colors and goldwork have remained beautifully fresh.
