This Japanese low table is a small floor-level desk made of Japanese cedar wood (Cryptomeria japonica), produced in Japan during the Showa period, circa 1926–1970. Originally conceived as a practical working and support surface for traditional interiors, it combines restrained functionality with the warm presence of everyday Japanese furniture.
In early Showa Japan, much of daily life took place close to the floor on tatami mats, which encouraged the use of low furniture. Pieces of this kind could serve for writing, reading, storing small personal items or carrying out domestic tasks, reflecting a flexible and essential approach to household design.
Its construction is simple yet solid, with closed side panels acting as structural supports and two integrated front drawers beneath the top. The metal handles reinforce its utilitarian character, while the gently raised curved back edge adds a discreet functional detail within an otherwise understated form.
The surface retains a rich original patina, with visible wear along the edges, drawer fronts and top. These marks of time, together with tonal and textural variations, enhance its authenticity and its strong affinity with wabi-sabi interiors.
Today, it fits naturally into Japandi, minimalist or rustic-inspired spaces, working as a low table, small floor desk or occasional storage piece. Its compact scale and warm materiality make it especially versatile in contemporary interiors.
