Product description
Small Japanese desk drawer cabinet with four drawers made from Japanese oak (Quercus spp.) and Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), with structural elements in plywood. The piece originates from Japan and dates to the mid-Showa period, circa 1945–1970, a time when Japanese domestic furniture began incorporating more industrial techniques while maintaining traditional functional design. The cabinet features a compact structure with four horizontal drawers, each fitted with curved metal handles, keyholes and small label holders, details that reflect its original use for organizing documents, stationery or small office items. The combination of Japanese oak and red pine provides both structural strength and relative lightness, while the use of plywood reflects the evolution of Japanese woodworking during the second half of the twentieth century, when utilitarian furniture increasingly adopted efficient manufacturing techniques. The surface now shows a soft natural patina developed over decades of use, with areas of wear revealing the grain of the wood. Small Japanese drawer cabinets like this were commonly used on desks in homes and offices, and today they work beautifully as desk organizers, small filing cabinets or decorative storage pieces in contemporary interiors.
