A great Dutch master artist, who sadly lived to be only 31 years old. His entire oeuvre, created between 1907 and 1918, comprises approximately 150 paintings, mostly in small formats, about 100 drawings, and over 40 sheets of graphic art, mainly etchings and woodcuts. Jan Mankes has gone down in art history as “Holland’s most serene painter”. He died young of tuberculosis, something that has contributed to the myth-making surrounding his artistry.
