The oeuvre of Jan Mankes (1889-1920), who has sometimes been characterized as "Holland's most tranquil painter," is characterized by a great love of nature and a particular attention to detail. In his short but productive life as an artist - he died of tuberculosis at the age of 31 - he accurately portrayed his feeling for the flora and fauna of the environment in which he lived. The stillness in his work is expressed especially in his pure, restrained use of color and the balance of his compositions. Mankes' oeuvre is modest in size and includes about two hundred paintings, a somewhat smaller number of sketches and drawings, and about fifty prints.
This richly illustrated book, which includes the most complete possible catalog of that oeuvre, focuses on Mankes' development, his sources of inspiration, his relationship with the art trade and the appreciation of his work to this day. Furthermore, it gives a good overview of the various aspects of his oeuvre, from the intimate (Self) portraits and still lifes to the atmospheric landscapes.
