After college and with the help of the GI Bill, Youngerman studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris (1947-49), staying in the city to paint until 1955. His school years in Paris were formative years when he met and befriended fellow students César, Ellsworth Kelly and Eduardo Paolozzi and visited the studios of the likes of Jean Arp and Constantin Brancusi.
In 1956, at the urging of gallery owner Betty Parsons, Youngerman returned to the United States and settled in New York.
After his first solo exhibition of geometric abstractions at the Galerie Arnaud, Paris (1951), Youngerman had many important solo exhibitions, including those at the Parrish Art Museum, Southampton, New York (1976, 2004) and Heland Wetterling Gallery, Stockholm (1989), as well as a retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1986).
