The Hutsuls are a Ukrainian ethnic group living primarily in the mountainous regions of Western Ukraine and Romania in the Carpathian Mountains.
Hutsuls are descendants of the Whiter Croats, a Slavic tribe who lived in the Carpathians. The name comes from the word "kochul", which means nomad, and may have referred to people who fled to the Carpathians in the 13th century from the Tatar invasion.
The Hutsuls developed an original local culture amidst their isolated mountain living conditions.
Hutsuls actively preserve their culture and pass it on to younger generations.
