Van Vessem (Rotterdam, 1939) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam from 1959 to 1962. His first exhibition was in 1968 at De Doelen in Rotterdam. He co-founded several institutions. In 1973, for example, he co-founded the Open Art Foundation, which aims to facilitate workshops and courses for professional artists, and in 1978, he and several others founded Grafisch Atelier Rijnmond. Throughout his career, Van Vessem was involved in numerous initiatives, such as Wendrich Art Editions, De Lijn, and the graphic workshop Orion for the mentally handicapped. In 1983, Van Vessem participated in Art Basel. He has traveled to and resided in France, New York, India, and Spain, among other places.
Van Vessem's work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. In 1999, he had a retrospective exhibition at the Jan van der Togt Museum in Amstelveen, where he received a knighthood at the opening.
