Product description
Designed by Heinz Siery for Carstens Tönnieshof, this sculptural handled vase is a refined example of West German ceramic design of the 1970s. Its compact, almost spherical body rises into a narrow neck, while the elegantly curved handle forms a strong graphic counterpoint to the organic silhouette. The vase is particularly distinguished by its exceptionally sophisticated glaze. Layers of deep olive and moss green merge into dark brown and almost bronze-toned areas, creating a subtle, richly modulated surface. Depending on the light, the glaze shifts between earthy green, muted metallic and warm brown tones, lending the piece an unusually elegant and almost mineral quality. Heinz Siery was an important figure in West German post-war ceramic design, developing forms and decorations for leading manufacturers including Carstens Tönnieshof and Scheurich. His documented work for Carstens includes complete series such as Syrakus and Troja, demonstrating his characteristic interest in clear sculptural forms combined with expressive surfaces. Carstens Tönnieshof itself was one of the significant manufacturers of post-war German ceramics. Founded in 1946 in Fredelsloh, the company developed during the Wirtschaftswunder into an important producer and trendsetter in West German fine stoneware and decorative ceramics. This example is preserved in exceptional collector-grade vintage condition, without chips, cracks or other damage. The original glaze remains beautifully intact, preserving both the depth of its coloration and the subtle surface variations that make each example unique. A highly decorative yet restrained object, combining organic modernism, sculptural clarity and the sophisticated glaze experimentation characteristic of West German ceramics.
