Luisenburg Porcelain
Heinrich Fuchs – “Calabash” Vase
Germany, c. 1960s–1970s
A sculptural porcelain vase designed by Heinrich Fuchs for Porzellanmanufaktur Luisenburg, executed in the distinctive “Calabash” (Calebasse) form.
Height: approx. 17 cm
Diameter: approx. 16 cm
Opening: approx. 8.5 cm
Material: Porcelain
Finish: Satin / matte glaze
Color: Deep brown with bronze undertones
Design & Form
The “Calabash” form references the natural double-gourd silhouette but translates it into a faceted, rhythmically structured body. Vertical ribbing wraps around the entire surface, creating a tactile geometry that plays with light and shadow.
Unlike smooth, organic gourd interpretations, Fuchs introduces disciplined segmentation: the vase appears almost architectural, constructed through evenly articulated panels that subtly compress and expand across the surface.
The satin glaze — a warm brown with metallic undertones — enhances the relief structure. Light grazes the ridges, revealing a quiet depth rather than glossy spectacle.
This is restrained modernism, not ornament.
Designer & Manufacturer Context
Heinrich Fuchs worked within the postwar German porcelain tradition, contributing forms that balanced functional clarity with sculptural presence.
Luisenburg, a Bavarian porcelain manufacturer, became known in the mid-20th century for modern tableware and decorative objects that moved away from historicist excess toward clean, contemporary profiles.
The “Calabash” form reflects that transition: organic reference, modern execution.
