In this first work from the Heartbreak series, M. van Eijk explores the silent space that emerges after loss. The composition revolves around a single, empty flower that carries a tangible absence. By reducing layers of color and movement to their essence, Van Eijk depicts how grief manifests when emotions remain undiminished: intense, unfinished, and deeply human.
The painting marks the beginning of an ongoing exploration into healing: flowers that are painted until the darkness slowly dissolves. Or as she herself says: “Painting the heartbreak away.” In this series, Van Eijk shifts from raw emotion to stillness, and from stillness to renewed growth. Heartbreak No. 1 is therefore both a testimony and a starting point; a work in which vulnerability and form find a new, symbolic language.
