“Heart” Candlestick, Staffan Gellerstedt for Pukeberg, 1970s – Sweden. The original Heart candlestick, designed by Staffan Gellerstedt for the Swedish glassmaker Pukeberg during the 1970s, forms the base of its almond-shaped stem, which separates into three arms, each holding a candle. Between them, two small heart-shaped pieces hang from the two gaps, giving the design its name. As is typical in his designs, it incorporates a textured or patterned surface that plays with the light and creates natural and organic effects. It is not just a decorative piece, but an icon in the history of Swedish design. Staffan Gellerstedt Staffan Gellerstedt is a Swedish glass designer and artist, born in 1944, who worked extensively for Pukeberg Glasbruk during the 1970s and 1980s. His pieces, especially art glass candlesticks and bottles, are recognized for their irregular texture and organic style, characteristic of modern Scandinavian design. Pukeberg Glasbruk, the historic Swedish glassworks Pukeberg is one of Sweden's oldest and most renowned glassworks, founded in 1871 in the town of Nybro, in the Småland region, known as Sweden's “Kingdom of Glass” (Glasriket). For over a century, it was renowned for producing both high-quality art glass and utility glass. It was noted for its innovation in glassblowing, pressing, and molding techniques. It was home to renowned Swedish designers such as Uno Westerberg, Eva Englund, and Signe Persson-Melin, who all contributed unique styles to its catalog. It experienced its creative peak between the 1950s and 1970s, producing a large number of pieces, both decorative and utilitarian, for export. Although industrial production has ceased, the original site in Nybro now houses the Pukeberg Design Center: a creative and educational hub that includes workshops, design studios, a gallery, and artist spaces. It is also part of the Glasriket (Glass Kingdom) tourist circuit.
