Rosenthal Studio-Line
“Lamina Rot” Vase & Lidded Box
Décor: Helmut Drexler
Form: Hans Wohlrab (Vase model 2698, 1971)
Germany
Satin porcelain with metallic lamina glaze
A striking Rosenthal Studio-Line duo in the rare and highly expressive “Lamina Rot” décor — combining a sculptural vase (model 2698, form by Hans Wohlrab, 1971) and a lidded box designed and decorated under Helmut Drexler’s artistic direction.
This pairing represents Rosenthal’s early 1970s transition from strict modernist graphics toward material-driven metallic surface experimentation.
Form & Structure
The vase (model 2698) is based on Hans Wohlrab’s disciplined 1950s form language — pure, architectural, tapering upward from a balanced, rounded body into a narrow neck.
The lidded box introduces a grounded, domed volume with spherical finial — echoing classical vessel typologies while remaining unmistakably modern in proportion.
Together they form a deliberate contrast of verticality and containment.
The “Lamina Rot” Surface
The Lamina Rot finish is among the most dramatic of Rosenthal’s metallic decors.
Deep red grounds are overlaid with irregular gold laminar structures, creating a cellular network reminiscent of molten metal, cracked enamel, or Byzantine cloisonné.
Under light, the surface shifts between:
• oxblood red
• warm vermilion
• luminous gold
• subtle bronze undertones
Unlike printed decoration, this finish has depth and painterly variation, with each piece exhibiting individual surface dynamics.

Design Context & Collector’s Perspective
Helmut Drexler’s metallic lamina series marks an important moment in Rosenthal’s design evolution — when porcelain became a site of alchemical experimentation rather than graphic precision.
This duo offers:
• Documented Wohlrab form (model 2698, 1971)
• Early metallic Lamina Rot décor
• Strong sculptural pairing
• Authentic Rosenthal Studio-Line production
• Bold late-modern German design presence
More expressive than Goldfeuer Grün, more dramatic than beige variants — Lamina Rot remains one of the most visually commanding Studio-Line finishes of the period.
Architectural, luminous, and unapologetically bold.
