Settled in Paris in the late 1940s, Hanna Ben-Dov quickly became part of the avant-garde art scene. She was close to Constantin Brancusi and actively participated in the Second School of Paris, alongside Joan Mitchell, Jean Degottex, Zao Wou-Ki, Jacques Yankel, Tal Coat, and Reginald Pollack.
Her work belongs to the tradition of Lyrical Abstraction, where gesture, light, and transparency are the true subjects of the composition. Each ink drawing reveals a refined sense of rhythm and space, expressed through a poetic and meditative pictorial language.
Ben-Dov exhibited in several major Parisian galleries between the 1950s and 1970s, including Galerie Cinq Mars (1960) and Galerie de l’Abbaye (1974). She also took part in group exhibitions in Largentière in 1960, among leading abstract painters of her generation.
The works presented here date from the 1960s, a decisive period in which Ben-Dov explored the expressive potential of ink and wash on paper. Each piece reflects her subtle research into movement, trace, and the breathing quality of paper.
Her works on paper from this decade are particularly rare on the market. Created in the intimacy of her studio, they capture the freedom of gesture and luminous research that define the most accomplished phase of her career. These pieces, both fresh and contemplative, perfectly embody the spirit of the New School of Paris — a dialogue between emotion, matter, and light, where each trace of ink becomes a space of silence and reflection.
A rare opportunity to acquire an authentic and historical work by a recognized artist of the post-war Parisian scene, and a direct witness to the vitality of lyrical abstraction.
