This wooden elephant is hand-painted in the Dutch Hindeloopen folk art style. Hindeloopen is a village in the Netherlands known for its floral painting style in muted colors. Although the painting style is inextricably linked to the town of Hindeloopen, the objects are made by various artists. Even today, this art form is still practiced in the Netherlands. This specific elephant was made by the Iekoon family in the village of Buren (there is a sticker from the maker on the bottom of the elephant). What makes this piece so special is that I have never seen an elephant in the Hindeloopen style before. Usually, you see the style on trays, boxes, candle holders, and so on. This is therefore absolutely a unique piece. The elephant is in very good condition and the animal's head can turn from left to right.
