Product description
An exceptional, hand-carved relief made of dark hardwood, likely from the mid-20th century. Its shield-like shape features pointed ends, and the ornamentation displays highly stylized natural and foliate motifs typical of several traditional carving traditions in Africa and South Asia.
The front of the panel is finely and completely openwork – a pure hand-carved piece with a striking decorative effect. The lighter edges within the ornamentation create a vibrant contrast to the dark wood.
The original carved hanger is attached to the back. The piece is sturdy, authentic, and shows signs of age and use that are typical and desirable.
