Designed by Günter Renkel for Rego Mobile Möbel in Göttingen, the Model 8700 tripod chair forms part of the “Twen” series, a modern furniture programme developed around 1957 for a new generation of interiors. The collection combined light construction, functional clarity and a restrained use of wood, metal and modern materials.The chair is one of the most distinctive designs of the series. Its slender black-lacquered steel frame supports a triangular upholstered seat, while a gently curved teak-veneered plywood backrest is suspended between two vertical uprights. The three-legged construction gives the chair an exceptional visual lightness and a precise, almost graphic character.Renkel studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm and belongs to the important generation of West German post-war designers shaped by functionalism, rational construction and the systematic design principles associated with the Ulm School. His wider work for companies such as Braun, Rosenthal, Lufthansa and Siemens places him firmly within the design culture of the Federal Republic.This example is preserved in exceptional, collector-grade original condition. It remains completely unrestored and retains its original black Skai / leatherette upholstery, which is remarkably well preserved. The teak backrest, lacquered steel frame and fittings likewise retain their authentic surfaces and period character.With its rare tripod construction, strong original substance and outstanding state of preservation, the Model 8700 is a refined and highly collectible example of German Mid-Century Modern and post-war functionalist design.
