Funny Kokeshi. Kokeshi are wooden dolls with a cylindrical shape, spherical heads, but without limbs. You encounter them throughout Japan, but they were born in Tōhoku. During the Edo period, woodworkers, the Kijishi, made Kokeshi from the scraps of wood left over after making bowls and trays. The word "Kokeshi" comes from Japanese and literally means "Small Wooden Doll". The term is derived from the Japanese words "koke" (木), meaning "wood", and "shi" (子), meaning "child" or "doll". This reflects the simple, wooden nature of the doll and its original function as a toy for children. Kokeshi dolls are considered good luck charms. They are often given as gifts to wish for luck, prosperity, and well-being. The dolls are also popular as collector's items and can be a valuable souvenir of Japanese culture and craftsmanship. The height is 8 cm; please view the photos for the condition. Please note: Kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and/or cracks to a greater or lesser extent.
