Product description
Gotlind & Gerald Weigel Organic Studio Ceramic Vase Duo – Crystalline and Tenmoku Glazes, Germany, 1970s–1980s An exceptional duo of studio ceramic vases by Gotlind and Gerald Weigel, among the most respected figures of post-war German Künstlerkeramik. Although differing in form and glaze, the two vessels share a common artistic language rooted in organic geometry, technical mastery, and a profound sensitivity to ceramic surfaces. Together they create a compelling dialogue between light and shadow, earth and fire, restraint and exuberance. The larger vessel presents itself as a near-perfect sphere pierced by a small central aperture, while the companion vase introduces a more classical bottle form with an elegantly elongated neck. Displayed as a pair, they achieve a remarkable sense of balance and sculptural harmony. Dimensions Spherical vase: H 13.5 cm, W 15 cm, D 15 cm Bottle vase: H 15 cm, W 13.5 cm, D 11.5 cm Material: Ceramic Artists: Gerald & Gotlind Weigel Colour: Amber, bronze, chocolate brown, beige, ivory and ochre Era: 1970s–1980s Origin: Germany Condition: Very good vintage condition; no chips, cracks or restorations. Remarks: Studio pottery with impressed artists' marks. A highly decorative and visually complementary pair. The spherical vase is distinguished by a spectacular crystalline glaze composition in shades of amber, bronze, honey-gold and warm ochre. Vertical glaze movement creates an effect reminiscent of weathered minerals, oxidised metals, or flowing lava. The tiny opening transforms the vessel from a conventional vase into an almost meditative sculptural object. Its rounded silhouette recalls seed pods, river stones, or ancient ritual vessels, while the surface reveals extraordinary depth and complexity under changing light. The accompanying bottle vase offers a striking contrast. A rich dark tenmoku-inspired glaze envelops the body, animated by countless fine golden speckles suspended beneath the glossy surface. Around the neck, a pale ivory glaze descends dramatically across the darker ground, creating a crown-like pattern that recalls volcanic flows, tree bark, or natural erosion. The elegant proportions and refined silhouette introduce a sense of verticality that complements the more compact spherical form. About Gerald & Gotlind Weigel Gerald and Gotlind Weigel occupy a significant place within the tradition of German studio ceramics. Working outside industrial production, they developed a body of work that combined technical experimentation with sculptural sensitivity. Their ceramics often blur the boundary between vessel and autonomous object, placing equal emphasis on form, glaze chemistry, and the unpredictable transformations of the kiln. Their work is particularly admired for: • Sophisticated high-temperature glazes • Organic forms inspired by nature and geology • Exceptional control of crystalline and flowing glaze effects • A balance between functional ceramics and sculptural presence • Strong connections to both East Asian ceramic traditions and European studio pottery The present duo exemplifies many of these qualities. The interaction between the dark tenmoku glaze of the bottle vase and the luminous amber crystalline surface of the spherical vessel creates a visual conversation that feels both harmonious and dynamic. Together they function not merely as decorative vessels but as studies in colour, proportion, and material transformation. Ideal for collectors of German Studiokeramik, Scandinavian organic modernism, Japanese-inspired interiors, and contemporary craft, this pair possesses a quiet sophistication that rewards prolonged observation. Their surfaces continuously reveal new nuances as light moves across them throughout the day, making them equally successful as individual artworks and as a carefully curated ensemble.
