From Military Barracks to Designer Armchair for the Home: A Unique Gispen Armchair This is not just any vintage armchair, but an authentic piece of Dutch design with a fascinating story. This chair originates from the military barracks in Vught and subsequently served in the Engineering Museum there. After standing in the basement for years, we recently purchased a batch of more than 15 pieces awaiting restoration, some of which are marked on the underside with the brand name Gispen. Robust and "Vandal-proof" Government Design. In the 50s, 60s, and 70s, Gispen was one of the main suppliers to the Dutch government and Defence. Because the furniture in barracks and ministries was used intensively, it had to be indestructible. While Gispen was still known in the 30s for its elegant, round tubular frames, designers such as A.R. Cordemeyer switched to a sleeker, industrial design in the late 50s. The result? An extremely strong, square steel frame, combined with warm wooden armrests. A perfect balance between functionality and Mid-Century aesthetics. Exclusive Project Furniture. This armchair almost certainly comes from a special project line (such as the business BZ or AZ series) that was never available for purchase by consumers at the time. It was designed purely for furnishing, for example, officers' quarters or reception areas, relaxation and recreation halls, and canteens. A rarity outside the gates. Because this barracks furniture was supplied directly to the Ministry of Defence and was often destroyed after the closure or renovation of the barracks, this model is rare on the open market. The fact that this particular example survived and has since been beautifully restored makes it a unique, historical, and valuable design object for the true enthusiast! The restoration. • The chair has been completely disassembled and cleaned; the armrests have been completely sanded and refinished with oil and then lacquered. • The frames, heavy and solidly constructed, have been cleaned and thoroughly inspected where necessary. • The upholstery has been completely renewed in the beautiful Odense Dark Green fabric from the Switch company, a first-class furniture fabric with a slight retro twist thanks to its lovely bouclé effect. Naturally, the interior has not been overlooked either; this armchair has been completely rebuilt and offers the comfort of a brand-new piece.
