Art Nouveau Cabinet with Gilded and Silvered Leather, circa 1920 – Spain
Spectacular cabinet with a wooden frame and gilded and silvered leatherwork, decorated with flowers and birds. A Spanish piece from the early 20th century, in the Art Nouveau style. The main body features three clean, straight sides, except for the bottom, which has a lobed, elephant-shaped skirt characteristic of the Art Nouveau style. This adds movement and visual impact. There are two symmetrical shelves at the top and a large drop-down shelf. It stands on a carved wooden base with four slender, turned legs joined by a crossbar.
The exceptional feature is the leatherwork, crafted using the artistic technique known as repoussé leatherwork, decorated with polychrome, gilded, and silvered flowers and birds. This technique originated in Arab culture and developed in Spain, particularly in Córdoba, Andalusia. It can be applied to Cordoban leather or sheepskin. Gilding, silvering, and polychrome techniques were applied to the prepared leather.
