**Rosenthal Studio-Line | Poetic Modernism in Porcelain**
Part ceramic canvas, part theatrical composition — this striking Rosenthal wall plate by **Gilbert Portanier** is an exceptional example of the artist’s lyrical style, where mythic suggestion meets Mediterranean joie de vivre.
Designed in the 1970s as part of the *Studio-Line* series, this piece belongs to Portanier’s **“Liguria”** collection — a dreamlike exploration of Italian landscapes and legendary figuration, executed in the language of abstraction.
The matte slate-grey porcelain acts as a stage for Portanier’s exuberant use of color and gold: acid greens, cobalt blues, warm reds, and burnished ochres dance in syncopated motion, resembling *calligraphic creatures* or *otherworldly processions*. What seems at first whimsical becomes subtly architectural and ritualistic.
A decorative red graphic border encircles the image like a theatrical proscenium — part shield, part spotlight.

Born in Cannes in 1926, **Gilbert Portanier** studied architecture and fine art before settling in **Vallauris**, France — the ceramic capital revitalized by Picasso. There, he became one of the most imaginative postwar voices in European ceramics. Portanier’s collaboration with Rosenthal in the 1970s brought his painterly, symbolic style to an international audience through limited artist editions such as *Liguria* and *Alta Mira*.
Each of his works is a celebration of ambiguity: half-figure, half-symbol; half-vessel, half-dream.
