Timeless Dutch Design Classic: Gijs van der Sluis ‘Model 540’ Sofa Bed
Meet an absolute icon of Dutch furniture history: the Model 540 sofa bed, designed in 1961 by Gijs van der Sluis for Van der Sluis Meubelen from the furniture city of Culemborg. This minimalist masterpiece exudes the purity of mid-century modernism. The design shares its DNA with famous contemporaries such as the BR02 by Martin Visser (for Spectrum) and fits perfectly into the tradition of sleek, functional Dutch Design. Thanks to an ingenious mechanism, this three-seater sofa transforms into a comfortable daybed with a single turn of the wrist.
This specific example has been fully restored by us with utmost precision and a love for craftsmanship. The iconic, heavy steel frame has been completely repainted to a sleek finish, allowing the minimalist lines to come into their own perfectly once again. No shortcuts were taken on the interior either: the entire internal structure and foam have been renewed for optimal, firm sitting and lying comfort that will last for decades to come. As the icing on the cake, the sofa features stunning new upholstery. A first-class furniture fabric from the top brand Oniro was chosen: a high-quality wool blend in an incredibly beautiful, contemporary green shade. This fabric gives the sleek design a warm, luxurious look and feels wonderfully comfortable.
A unique opportunity for the vintage design enthusiast who loves the perfect synergy between aesthetics, history, and practical convenience.
This eye-catcher is ready for a prominent spot in a fantastic interior!
