Made in England is this cream-colored metal lamp in its original paint. The English automotive engineer George Carwardine designed the “Anglepoise,” a desk lamp, around 1930 and patented its innovative construction in 1932. The shade is attached to a long arm that hinges at two points.
Thanks to this construction, not only is the lampshade adjustable, but the user can also position the entire lamp in various ways, depending on the desired light source. The balance between the forces is achieved in all positions in which the lamp can be adjusted by springs that work on the principle of the muscles in the human arm. The springs are attached to both sides of the lower hinge point of the lamp arm, so that they work by compensating for opposing forces to keep the lamp in balance.
The construction that George Carwardine developed for this lamp is still used today, and not only for lighting. The “Anglepoise” lamp by George Carwardine was made in various models for fifty years and produced on a large scale by the English company Herbert Terry & Sons in Redditch.
