A pair of Garden Egg Chairs, designed by Peter Ghyczy, Germany, 1970s
The Garden Egg Chair is a Space Age design icon, created by Peter Ghyczy in 1968. These particular pieces were manufactured in Germany in the 1970s.
Ghyczy's design is the epitome of the Space Age style—an aesthetic born out of the widespread fascination with space exploration in the 1960s and 1970s. Its sleek, organic shapes and modern materials were meant to evoke futuristic visions of life in space. The "egg" shape itself, which shields the interior from sun and rain when closed, is a brilliant fusion of form and function.
The distinctive character of these chairs is defined by the vibrant, saturated yellow color of their shells. The smooth outer body contrasts beautifully with the original, black textured upholstery. Although originally intended for terraces and gardens, these chairs have now become highly sought-after collector's items, rarely exposed to the elements.
This pair of chairs is in very good, original condition. Such preservation is rare, suggesting that even their first owners treated them as valuable and precious items, protecting them from heavy use. The chairs show natural signs of wear and age, such as minor scratches, scuffs, and small dents on the surface, which do not detract from their impressive and fresh overall appearance.
Originally designed for the West German company Reuter, the "Garden Egg Chair" proved extremely costly to manufacture due to its innovative materials and production processes. Consequently, the production license was sold, and the chairs ultimately went into production at VEB Synthesewerk Schwarzheide in East Germany.
