Description
Gaetano Pesce was an Italian architect, designer, and artist. He was also a professor of architectural design at the Institut d'Architecture et d'Études Urbaines in Strasbourg and a visiting lecturer at various universities worldwide.
From 1858 to 1965, he studied industrial design at the Istituto Superiore di Disegno Industriale in Venice. During this time, he joined the artist collective Gruppo N. The group was dedicated to the phenomena of kinetic art and computer art, known as Arte Programmata. Pesce first attracted international attention in 1969 with his inflatable chair "UP." From then on, Gaetano Pesce's works were always rigorously experimental and characterized by the use of innovative materials. "A certain geometry is complete," according to Pesce, for example, with "triangles, rectangles, circles." Traditional materials such as stone, iron, metal, and wood were also taboo. These were "witnesses" of a different era, according to Pesce. "What is not over is the figure and futuristic, flexible materials." Pesce preferred to work with foam, synthetic resin, and felt. This is also the case with the Feltri armchair offered here from 1986. The body and seat are made of wool felt stiffened with synthetic resin. Today, the armchair is an icon of nonconformism.
Pesce knew how to merge the disciplines of art and design like no other. His works, often filled with humor and irony, are represented in the collections of the world's most important museums.
Gaetano Pesce died in New York in 2024.
