Funny Sosaku Kokeshi. This is a creative (sosaku) kokeshi with a modern or playful design. Unlike traditional, sleek kokeshi dolls, this one has a very expressive, almost caricatural face with large eyes and a small open mouth. The shape is also atypical due to the "head" that appears to rest on top of a rounder body. The painting on the body, depicting what looks like a landscape or natural elements (such as trees/plants), points to an artistic interpretation rather than the classic kimono patterns seen on many traditional dolls. Since the 1950s, there has been a movement in Japan where artisans took more freedom in form, color, and design. This figurine clearly falls within this "sosaku"-category, where the artist has given the doll a unique character instead of following a fixed regional model. This type of doll is often collected because of the artistic expression and the unique character that each handmade doll possesses. The height is 8 cm. For the condition, please view the photos. Please note: the kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and/or cracks to a greater or lesser extent.
