The Fritz Hansen Swan Chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. He had been commissioned to design and furnish the hotel. A major project, therefore, in which he could put his vision of the interplay between architecture and design into practice. The soft, organic shapes of the Swan Chair formed a beautiful contrast to the clean horizontal and vertical lines of the hotel itself. The Swan was given a spot in the hotel lobby, alongside the iconic Egg Chair and several other Arne Jacobsen pieces of furniture. Thanks to their round interplay of lines, both armchairs were real eye-catchers and technologically innovative, because until that time it had not yet been possible to produce furniture with such shapes.
The reason it worked with the Swan Chair is because the shell is made of firm foam, which can be easily shaped. The foam is then covered with leather or fabric. To achieve the perfect shape, Arne Jacobsen spent days scraping a clay model in the garage of his summer home. Like a true artist, he worked there on this beautiful armchair and thus created an absolute design icon. The base of the armchair is made of aluminum and stands on a polished steel base. The Swan Chair has a standard seat height of 40 centimeters and is 77 centimeters high, 74 centimeters wide and 68 centimeters deep.
