Product description
Crafted in 2004 by Mira Nakashima, this Frenchman’s Cove II dining table exemplifies her sensitive continuation of the Nakashima family philosophy: honoring the natural life of wood while refining form through thoughtful craftsmanship. Executed in American black walnut, elm, and East Indian rosewood butterflies, the table features a rectilinear two-part top with straight edges, vivid expressive grain, live edges, and natural sap streaks - signatures of Mira’s studio practice that reinterpret, rather than replicate, her father George’s legacy. The four rosewood butterfly joints punctuate the surface with sculptural precision, reinforcing natural seams while adding rhythmic contrast. The Frenchman’s Cove lineage originates from a 1959 commission for a Jamaican resort by George Nakashima. Mira’s later iterations, such as this 2004 example, evolve the design through strengthened architectural bases and a sharper exploration of proportion and material dialogue. Its architectonic base, formed by multiple vertical supports and a substantial rectangular stretcher, reflects the evolution from George’s original single-pedestal concept into a more structurally assertive and visually balanced form. Both sculptural and grounded, the table offers a poised harmony between studio craft, functional architecture, and the poetic presence of natural wood.
