A very pretty, medium-sized Florentine tray in hand-painted molded wood, enhanced with patinated gilding. 1950-1960.
It is decorated with a central medallion featuring roses and wildflowers, surrounded by a frieze of raised arabesques.
The rim is scalloped and painted green with a marbled effect.
At the four corners, a gilded, checkered pattern from which descend four cabochons imitating precious stones.
The reverse is gilded and checkered, and a stamped mark in the wood indicates "Made in Italy."
This tray comes from a workshop in the Florence region of Italy; it was produced on a large scale for export and to European tourism, a period when Florentine Baroque and Rococo ornamentation (17th-18th centuries) was highly prized. The popularity of these trays increased significantly after the war.
This piece shows signs of wear on the central medallion, indicating domestic use rather than as an ornament or decoration. Aside from this, it is in very good condition.
Very charming!
