This extraordinary pair of antique fire dogs is a striking example of functional decorative objects from the turn of the 20th century.
The turban on antique French fire dogs (chenets) represents the historical fashion phenomenon of Orientalism and reflects the fascination with the culture of the Ottoman Empire and Asia. Orientalism and Exoticism: Fashion trend: In the 18th and 19th centuries, "Turkish" and "Moorish" motifs were very popular in European art and crafts.
Decoration: The busts were not intended to represent a specific political or religious triumph, but rather served as exotic room decorations for stately salons.
The turbaned faces acted as a stylish focal point around the open fire. Beautiful antique cast iron fire dogs from the 19th century (also known as fire dogs or chenets).
The workmanship and casting quality suggest continental European production, likely in France, Belgium, or the Franco-German border region (Lorraine/Saarland).
Suitable for use in old and modern fireplaces, as a decorative object in the home, as a bookend, or for other purposes – the possibilities are endless.
The figure on the right has a crack on each side of the base, but this does not affect its function; it stands solidly and stably.
