Elegant lamp with ceramic base and textile shade by Scheurich Keramik, model 408-40, made in Germany in the 1960s.
The jar-shaped base with side handle, presents a rich contrast of textures, glazes and chromaticism in earth tones and browns. Its shades of moss green and earth brown form an organic and asymmetrical pattern, typical of this aesthetic language, in which the glaze reproduces forms that evoke solidified volcanic lava.
The conical lampshade, made of rustic cotton, stands out for its remarkable height and textile richness. It has an embroidered border that harmonizes with the earthy palette of the base. The result is a lamp with a rustic and decorative character. The term Fat Lava refers to the thick relief achieved in the enamels, reminiscent of the surface of erupting lava.
About "Fat Lava" and Scheurich Keramik:
Fat Lava ceramics is one of the most iconic styles of mid-20th century German design, characterized by its volcanic textures, dense glazes and bold forms. Key is the incorporation of organic forms and modernist geometries into the use of glaze, through which it was intended to recreate hardened lava flows, mineral bubbles and abstract landscapes.
Scheurich Keramik, one of the most prolific manufactures of the period known as West German Pottery (WGP), was instrumental in the development and popularization of this style.
The company was founded in 1923 in Germany and began selling porcelain and glass tableware wholesale. It was not until the 1950s that Scheurich began producing ceramics. In the 1960s, the "Fat Lava" era began with thickly textured drip glazes and bubbling crater-effect glazes that gave the effect of lava. Until the 1980s, Scheurich was the largest ceramic manufacturer in West Germany. The five digits engraved on the base of the vases indicate shape and size. For example, in the digits 525-50, the "525" represents the shape, while the "50" indicates that the vase is 50 cm tall. Newer pottery has a three-circle mark engraved on the base of the pieces. Scheurich continues to remain one of the leading German producers of ceramics today.
