Product description
Dining crank table, J.& J. W. Meeks, New York, mahogany wood, 19th c. - United States Crank dining table with extension Workshop / Manufacture: J.& J. W. Meeks, New York Material: Mahogany wood Period: Mid 19th century Country of origin: New York, United States Provenance: Private Collection Good condition for its age and use Dimensions: 74 x 105 x 105 cm. / 148 cm. wide with extension Exquisite dining table, made in the workshop of the renowned cabinetmakers J. & J. W. Meeks of New York, active during much of the 19th century. The piece features an elegant polished mahogany finish, with a distinctive sheen that highlights the natural grain of the wood. The square tabletop has a central division that indicates its extension mechanism by means of a crank handle, a characteristic system of the firm that allowed to extend the surface of the table in a practical and sophisticated way. A thin, discreet skirt runs along the table and thus covers the space in which the extension is concealed. The cabriole legs end in rounded feet, giving a Queen Anne or Chippendale-inspired look. Small wheels on the legs facilitate mobility. This type of table not only served a practical function for family and social gatherings, but also reflected the status and taste for quality furniture of New York high society in the mid-19th century. Plaque identifying the workshop of this exclusive American manufacturer, whose works have been the subject of international auctions. Some of his pieces can be seen today in museums around the world, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Columbus Museum and the Historic New Orleans Collection, among others. John and Joseph W. Meeks of New York was a quality firm active between 1797 and 1869. Due to protectionist policies passed by Congress and the War of 1812, the South was cut off from European imports, resulting in the growing demand for quality European goods coming from the North. These needs were recognized by Meeks. Most New York furniture manufacturers were simply shipping their products, but Meeks opted to make short trips by personally delivering his goods to those customers in the South.
