Product description
A highly decorative, portable Indonesian writing desk from the 18th century, crafted from beautiful Amboyna wood with elegant ebony trim and original openwork brass fittings and handles. The desk stands on a later custom-made hardwood base with a drawer, expertly crafted to complement the original piece of furniture and form a beautiful writing table. The sloping lid reveals a spacious writing compartment with three built-in drawers, ideal for storing documents, writing implements, and valuables. The desk still features the original brass lock and key. These portable writing desks were used by high-ranking officials of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) stationed in the Dutch East Indies. They were essential for writing reports and correspondence sent to Batavia regarding trade, politics, and daily life in the colonies, making such pieces of furniture both functional and historically significant. The later base is professionally crafted and matches the original cabinet beautifully, creating the impression that the two have always belonged together. Dimensions Writing desk Height: 22 cm Width: 77 cm Depth: 56 cm Total (with base) Height: 97 cm Width: 85 cm Depth: 59 cm Space under table: 59 cm Features Indonesia, 18th century Amboyna wood with ebony details Original perforated brass fittings and handles Original working lock and key Rocking writing surface Three built-in drawers Later custom-made hardwood base with one drawer Rich color and exceptional grain Historical note High-ranking VOC officials stationed in the Indonesian archipelago were required to prepare detailed reports for the High Government in Batavia.
