EROS Console Table, Marquina Black Marble, Angelo Mangiarotti for Skipper, 1970 – Italy
An exceptional Italian console table, the EROS model, designed by Angelo Mangiarotti for Skipper, crafted from Marquina black marble. It retains the original brand hallmark, serving as a certificate of authenticity. Skipper Italia is an Italian brand of high-end designer furniture made with fine materials, renowned for its collaborations with iconic designers such as Angelo Mangiarotti and Bruno Gecchelin during the 1970s and 1980s.
This is one of the most iconic and elegant pieces of 20th-century Italian design: a sophisticated and timeless console table with an organic design. The design's name, EROS, refers to its gravity-based assembly system. The console tabletop rests securely on its two truncated conical legs without the need for joints. Installation is achieved using a tongue-and-groove joint, allowing for a clean and precise fit. The design stands as the culmination of Mangiarotti's research into balanced structures.
It is also a clear example of Mangiarotti's philosophy of "less is more." The structure is functional and sturdy, yet unpretentious. The form flows naturally, allowing the table to fit seamlessly into both modern and more classic settings. It is not only an attractive design object but also a functional one. Its structure allows it to be used in a variety of environments. His ability to create a piece that is both functional and a work of art in itself is what has made this design a collector's item and a classic of modern and Italian design.
Angelo Mangiarotti (Milan, 1921-2012)
